The Lord's Day, Sunday [or other day for other religions], is to be
considered the best day for performance of good works by the laity,
because nothing is more holy than to implement Christ's instructions on such matters; and such
works of charity by the laity should be as direct to needy [sick,
orphaned, handicapped, poor, imprisoned, persecuted, retarded, uneducated, homeless, etc.] as
is possible -- i.e. this is to be supplemental to the church
organization's own formal programs of charity.
